Who Is Most at Risk?
Same smoke, different risks
Smoke reaches everyone, but some people are more sensitive and some communities have fewer ways to protect themselves.
Children
Breathe more air for their body size and have developing lungs and brains.
Older adults
More likely to have heart or lung conditions that smoke can worsen.
People with existing conditions
Including asthma, COPD, heart disease or diabetes, and people who are pregnant.
Outdoor workers
Spend long hours outside, often doing physical work that increases breathing.
Communities with fewer resources
May have less access to filtered indoor spaces, health care, or the ability to leave.
